We all know weather in the UK can be somewhat unpredictable and unfortunately the exterior of our homes and properties often suffer the consequences, particularly in the colder months.
So if you missed out on M & R’s Winter Warmers special then, now with spring fresh in the air, is the ideal time to give your property a thorough health check to ensure everything is safe and secure and well maintained.
You may also at this time, like to take the opportunity to give your property a revitalising mini makeover, to give it that fresh energised spring feeling.
Spring Revival Checklist
It’s a good idea to start at the top and work your way down when assessing what jobs need to be done on your property.
- Start off by looking at the roof; has the winter weather caused any damage? Are there any loose tiles or slates? Or any other visible damage. Remember for safety reasons, DO NOT attempt to access the roof yourself, always appoint a specialist if you are concerned.
- Next, have a look at the guttering for damage and check for any sign of moss or algae which is a sign that water is leaking from the guttering. If you are able, clear away any blockages, leaves and debris that may have accumulated in the guttering over the winter months. A simple test to check your guttering is working is to pour a jug of water down and make sure there are no blockages but be careful as you may have to use a ladder to do this. Replace damaged or rusted cast-iron guttering with a modern alternative.
- Check exterior timber, windows, doors, frames etc. for any signs of deterioration and decay.
- Consider getting the external timber work replaced with a low maintenance PVC-U
- Check exterior paintwork and make a painting plan of action
- Check paths and patios for any frost damage or algae which may have settled over the winter. You can buy various products at a local garden centre to remove algae or moss. Using a pressure washer can also clear dirt from a patio but be careful that you do not do this when the weather is still frosty, as the patio could ice over and cause an accident
- Check and repair fences and gates. Timber items in the garden often bear the brunt of winter weather so make sure you treat any items with a good preservative.
- Check around the garden for other problems, looking out for possible hazards such as holes dug by wildlife.
- Consider ways to improve your gardens appearance and functionality such as installing some decking.
- Restore and clean garden furniture.
You can probably do most of these seasonal checks and jobs yourself, but remember doing maintenance and improvement work yourself can actually be a false economy as work which is completed to a poor standard can actually reduce the value of your home.
So if in doubt it’s always best to call in a builder. But remember if you do need help make sure you choose your builder carefully and arrange to run through the checklist together and come an agreement before any work is undertaken.
